Welcome Timberlake Church to the Ascent Movement!
Timberlake Church in Lynchburg, VA is now an official partner of the Ascent Movement. Led by Pastor Brad McMullen, this multigenerational congregation is committed to helping people grow as disciples of Jesus and live out that faith in tangible ways.
For many decades, Timberlake has been a faithful witness to the gospel in Lynchburg. However, over the past few years, after a season of denominational disruption, and with an increased focus on community impact, Timberlake has experienced significant growth as it has opened a new chapter.
“Timberlake has experienced an impressive season of Spirit-led vitality and is now moving into a season of multiplication. It is an authentic witness to the disciple-making heritage of John Wesley, and is a great partner for the Ascent Movement and our vision. It joins many other former United Methodist Churches that have found a new home among the Ascent Community”, shared Chris Backert, Ascent’s Senior Director.

This growth in mission is perhaps most visible in the way Timberlake serves its neighbors. Through its Fillin’ Station food pantry and partnerships with local schools and community organizations, the church helps provide food to hundreds of households facing food insecurity. Its outreach extends further through disaster relief, international missions, and ministry to veterans. In addition, its church-based Child Development Center is serving families and opening a path to Christian community for those who might not initially attend church, much like several churches through the Ascent movement who are engaged with the Vital Preschools Initiative.
For Timberlake, these ministries are not simply programs. They reflect a conviction that following Jesus means noticing the needs around you, and responding.
That same desire for connection and shared mission helped lead Timberlake to the Ascent Movement, joining a broader community of churches and leaders seeking to encourage one another, learn together, and strengthen their witness in the places God has called them to serve.
Brad McMullen, Lead Pastor at Timberlake, was involved in the formation of Ascent over the last two years and is delighted that Timberlake is now an official partner.

“When we disaffiliated from our previous denomination, we needed a landing place, a church network to keep us connected to the global Church. Ascent is that and so much more. In partnership with our sister churches, we have found support, prayer, enthusiasm for the gospel, and a shared mission to reach North America with the good news of Jesus.”
